Peanut Butter Blossoms

This is day one of my holiday series: Seven Days of Holiday Treats! I aim to share with you some of my favorite holiday sweets and baked goods. Some recipes are my own, and some have been passed down for generations in my family. It only seems appropriate to begin with Peanut Blossom cookies as my first shared recipe because it carries such a long history in my immediate family.

This cookie is dedicated to my sister. These are her absolute favorite holiday cookies. I can remember making these every year for her birthday. It was a tradition for her to take them as her birthday treat to elementary school, which meant we made many many batches of these little gems. I can remember one particular year when our dad accidentally filled the bowl with salt (instead of sugar) for rolling the balls of dough…that was certainly a tough realization when we went to taste them. It is also a tough reputation to live down, might I add. ; )

Even though we are grown up now, the tradition remains. It doesn’t seem like the holidays until we pull these soft cookies out of the oven and race to place the Hershey kisses on top. I recommend making at least a double batch of these at one time, approximately 50 cookies, because they will disappear faster than anticipated! Also, these are great cookies for freezing. After they get the Hershey kiss on top, let the cookies cool, then place in a freezer plastic bag until ready to use. These are very festive to pull out for any holiday gathering or unexpected guest.

  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. peanut butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 3/4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Hershey kisses (Recommended: Dark Chocolate)
  • Additional sugar for rolling dough

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine both sugars, shortening, peanut butter, vanilla, egg, and milk. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix until well combined with a mixer.

Roll the dough into balls using a cookie scoop or small ice cream to help make each cookie equal in size. Roll the balls of dough in sugar and place on a baking sheet.

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes. Remove the cookies from the oven and place kisses in the middle of the cookie; push down on the chocolate kisses so they form cracks around the edges of the cookies.

Is it possible to resist??

Is it possible to resist??

Let cool for 2 minutes and then place on a wire rack to cool completely. At this point you can serve or freeze them for a later date. Happy holidays and enjoy!
